A nonprofit organization formed to improve the health of residents in Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun counties will be holding a walk-a-thon to put families in step with healthy living.
The Tri-County Health Network will be sponsoring the Healthy Family Holiday Walk-A-Thon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Regional Medical Center’s Community Walking Trail located at 3000 St. Matthews Road in Orangeburg.
The event is free and open to the public and will include prizes and refreshments.
TCHN Director Melissa Sherman said the event is being put on by the network’s Healthy Eating and Active Living Committee, or HEAL. It is one of three committees that welcomes participation and input from tri-county residents on helping the network better understand and respond to the unique health needs of each community.
In addition, a chronic disease committee and a health ministry committee are in place.
“That (HEAL) committee focuses on families being able to do things and be physically active. This is probably the third event that this committee has sponsored,” Sherman said.
The whole objective of the walk-a-thon and other activities is to improve health outcomes in the tri-county area, she said.
“What we try to do is have activities that will support that,” Sherman said.
