Cordova meth suspect accused of trafficking ecstasy in Orangeburg

A Cordova man awaiting trial on a methamphetamine charge is now accused of trafficking ecstasy.

Travis Lorenzo Tyler, 30, of 112 Tatum Road, is facing one count each of trafficking ecstasy, possession of a stolen handgun and unlawful carrying of a pistol.

In addition, he was cited for violation of a beginner’s driver’s permit, open container and simple possession of marijuana.

Tyler was driving a red Mercury on Magnolia Street at 5:16 p.m. Monday when an officer noticed the middle brake light was not functioning and the rear right turn signal blinked rapidly, according to an Orangeburg Department of Public Safety incident report.

The officer initiated a traffic stop. Tyler said that he knew the front right turn signal wasn’t functional, the report said.

He provided the officer with vehicle registration and proof of insurance, however, he had a beginner’s driver’s permit, the report states.

The officer said that Tyler’s movements, “appeared to be very furtive and his hands shook with nervousness.”

The officer soon realized that Tyler was out on bond on a possession of methamphetamine charge from May 2018.

Tyler allegedly told the officer that he had a can of open beer in between the passenger’s seat and driver’s seat and a handgun under the driver’s seat.

At that point, the officer retrieved the police dog named Drago to sniff for the presence of narcotics.

The dog’s behavior conveyed to the officer that there were narcotics in the front and backseat of the vehicle.

An orange cooler in the backseat caught Drago’s attention.

When an officer opened it, he discovered iced water, unopened cans of Michelob Ultra and a Mentos container.

The incident report and warrants allege the Mentos container held a plastic baggy containing 100 pills of different colors and shapes, such as a bull, a skull and crossbones and a cat.

In the front of the Mercury, an officer located an additional 24 pills that matched those found in the container, the report said.

Further search of the Mercury turned up an additional handgun under the driver’s seat.

The officer reported that when he told Tyler he was under arrest for the stolen handgun, Tyler asked, “Which one?”

Tyler later said that the light blue Taurus handgun belonged to his friend and the black Taurus handgun belonged to his cousin.

If convicted of trafficking ecstasy, Tyler faces a minimum sentence of three years and up to 10 years in prison. No part of the prison term may be suspended nor probation granted.

In addition, he faces a maximum fine of $20,000.

An Orangeburg municipal judge set Tyler’s bond at $20,000 on Tuesday.
