During the annual Watermelon and Vegetable Field Day July 13 in Blackville, Gilbert Miller, assistant extension director at the Clemson Edisto Research and Education Center, reported a slight increase in acreage planted for spring 2017 and anticipates an increase in fall acreage as well. In all, Miller estimates a total of 8,000 planted acres for watermelons in South Carolina this year. “We have a tremendous watermelon crop this year. Several growers, including myself, are reporting crops twice the size we normally have.”
