As Valentine’s Day approaches we went back in our archives to find
pictures that show different expressions of love on this special day.
1990
While strolling
down the streets of
Bowman, 12-yearold David Gilyard
pauses to read the
Valentine greetings covering the
windows of Boland
Pharmacy. Owner
Julian Boland asked
the first through sixth
grade students of the
schools in Bowman
see who could make
the most attractive
greeting cards.
1979
Today is Valentine’s
Day, the day of
expressing love and
affection. Four-year-old
Beth Copeland expresses her love for the
chocolate candy that
comes in heart-shaped
boxes. Beth only has
two problems: She
missed her mouth with
a good portion of the
candy and she now has
none left. She jumped
the gun and ate the
candy on Monday.

2004
For Janice Judy
of Reevesville, the
Valentine’s Day
display is seen
as a symbol of
happiness and joy
in what she sees
as an often-times
cruel and dark
world. “We need
all the laughter
we can get these
days,” she said.

1996
Six couples, including Harold and
Stephanie Gordon
(foreground) and Earl
and Agnes Ishmael
(background), took
part in a special
course offered by the
Orangeburg County
Chapter of the
American Red Cross,
“CPR for Sweethearts”. Couples
learned to overcome
their reluctance to
act in emergencies.
