The second “Battle of Orangeburg County” again saw the top-ranked Orangeburg-Wilkinson girls and Lake Marion boys come out on top in decisive fashion Tuesday night at O-W.

In the girls’ game, the Bruinettes jumped out to a 14-2 advantage after the first quarter and rolled to a 76-26 win over the Lady Gators. Sophomore Dejoria Howard led O-W (4-0) with 16 points, followed by Kiara Mitchell with 14 and Sade Johnson with 13.

O-W, ranked first in Class 3-A by the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association, will now look for the second “series sweep” of the season this Thursday when the Bruinettes play host to former Class 4-A nemesis and sixth-ranked Spring Valley. O-W snapped a five-game losing streak to the Lady Vikings with a 50-44 victory in Columbia on Nov. 27.

The boys’ game saw the Gators, ranked first in Class 2-A, use a dominant third quarter to pull away for a 54-41 win over the third-ranked Bruins. Preseason Top Five Class 2-A selection Khalil Halls led all scorers with 23 points and T&D Elite 11 football star and Clemson commit wide receiver Mike Williams added 13 points as Lake Marion outscored O-W 19-8 in the third quarter.

“The third quarter we had a few turnovers,” O-W head coach Tracey Gamble said. “We went through a scoring drought and they went on a scoring run that allowed them to maintain the rest of the way.”

Preseason top five statewide selection Tashombe Riley had a team-high 15 points in a losing effort. O-W (1-3) will try again to avenge an early-season loss this Thursday at home against fifth-ranked Spring Valley.
