Orangeburg-Wilkinson went to Hartsville and took a 3-0 win to start state Class 4A volleyball playoffs on Thursday, winning with set scores of 25-10, 25-13, and 25-11.
O-W was led by Makayla Berry with 15 kills, 2 Aces, 8 digs, and 8 service points, Jeneene Lewis with 14 digs, 7 service points, Khalia Garvin with 10 kills, 8 service points, 5 digs, Jayla Hill with 21 service points, 3 kills, 4 aces, Meagan Green with 4 aces, 10 service points, 15 digs, Aliana McCants with 3 blocks, and 4 kills. Jada Berry added 36 assists, 8 service points, 2 blocks, and 7 digs. Morgan Blanchard added 3 block kills.
O-W will play the winner out of Hilton Head and Marlboro County on Tuesday.
Claflin cross country
teams vie for SIAC
The Claflin University men's and women's cross country teams will close out their seasons this Friday, October 20, at the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Cross-Country (SIAC) Championships.
The races will feature both men's and women's teams from all SIAC member schools with the exception of Morehouse College who only sponsors men's cross country.
“We have a young teams on both sides with a few veterans, but I definitely expect the usual Panther competitive spirit,” head coach Lincoln London said. “On the women side I'm expecting seniors Jamaica Miller and Brandi Taylor to run their best race. On the men's team, we have an ace in freshman Domenic Samuel, who is expected to run well along with seniors You’shi Kirkland and Odou Hazel is expected to remain equally competitive and match him toe-for-toe.
"We set small goals at the beginning of the season and we are here to achieve them.”
The event kicked off Thursday afternoon at West Campus' Rec Gymnasium with a Community Engagement activity. Forty children from the Boys and Girls Club interacted with student-athletes from SIAC member institutions.
On Championship Friday, the women's 5K race will begin at 9:30 a.m. while the men's, an 8K run, is slated for an approximate start of 11 a.m. Both races will take place near the soccer fields on West Campus of Albany State.

Calhoun Academy took a 36-12 win against Pinewood Prep on Thursday to finish the season with a perfect 7-0 record.
Matt Layton scored on runs of 45, 35 and 25 yards, while also adding 3 two-point conversions.
Andrew Tucker caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Layton and added a 20-yard touchdown run.
Layton led the defense with 5 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss. Lane Noe had 4 tackles, one for a loss, and a fumble recovery.
Laurence Manning 47
Orangeburg Prep 20
Orangeburg Prep finished its season losing to Laurence Manning, 47-20 on Thursday, in the JV Region Championship game.
OPS ends its season with a 4-3 record as region runner-up.
Dylan Wilson scored two touchdowns on runs of 8 and 5 yards.
McCullough Mims had a 34-yard touchdown pass to Nick Shafer and also passed for a 2-point conversion to Shafer.
Defensive leaders were Kenneth Fogle, Elliott Fogle, and Peyton Inabinet, who also had a quarterback sack. Amir Tyler added 2 pass break-ups.
