Albany State nets
3-1 win over Claflin
Albany State University defeated Claflin University, 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25), in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division volleyball match on Thursday.
With the loss, Claflin dropped to 4-12 overall and 4-6 in SIAC play.
Albany State improved to 11-7 overall and 11-3 in the SIAC.
Diara Lewis led the Lady Panthers in the losing effort with 16 kills. Jala Roberts added 10 kills and Chania Rispress had 35 assists and three blocks for Claflin.
Justice Howard and Chelona Holmes led Albany State with 18 and 16 kills, respectively.
After playing to a 9-9 tie through the first 18 points of set one, Albany State outscored the Lady Panthers 16-10 the rest of the way to win the set, 25-19.
The second set saw seven ties and eight lead changes with Claflin scoring seven of the last nine points in route to winning set two, 25-20.
The third set was close throughout with Albany State holding a slim 17-16 advantage after 33 points. The visitors went on a 7-3 scoring run to take a 24-19 lead, its biggest of the set, before winning the set 25-21.
In the final set, Claflin led on three occasions, the last being 10-9. Albany State scored four straight points to take the lead for good, 13-10. The Lady Rams finished the set by outscoring the Lady Panthers 15-11, for the 25-21 set win and 3-1 match win.
Claflin will take a break for SIAC action, playing host to Shaw University this Saturday (Oct. 14) in a non-conference match. First serve is set for 2 p.m. in Tullis Arena.
COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY
SCSU to host
The South Carolina State cross country teams will host the third annual Bulldog Duels ON Saturday morning at the Matthews Industrial Park on Highway 301 North.
The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s 5K. The men’s 8K will follow at 10:30 a.m.
Joining Coach Tim Langford’s SC State teams in this year’s field will be Benedict, Claflin, Florida A&M, Paine, Savannah State and USC-Aiken.

Robert E. Lee 14
Calhoun Academy improved their record to 5-0 with a 26-14 win over Robert E. Lee on Thursday.
CA was led by great blocking up front from Chase Cooper, Hunter Summers, Cameron Crosby, Kade Strickland, Ben Ott, Lane Noe and Mac Felder. Matt Layton scored four touchdowns and a two-point conversion.
On defense, Adam Lowder had eight tackles and a sack, Strickland had seven tackles and a sack and Andrew Tucker had an interception.
The Cavaliers will host Colleton Prep on Monday at 6 p.m.
Orangeburg Prep 14
Wilson Hall 6
Orangeburg Prep increased its winning streak to four games with a 14-6 win over Wilson Hall on Thursday.
Dylan Wilson scored on runs for four and nine yards, Wilson also scored on a two-point conversion for the Indians.
The defense was led by Kenneth Fogle, Elliot Fogle, Zach Felkel, Nick Shafer and Peyton Inabinet recovered a fumble.
OPS (4-2) will travel to Laurence Manning next Thursday to play for the region championship at 7 p.m.

Orangeburg Prep 1
Orangeburg Prep concluded the season with 3-1 home loss to Felton Lab on Thursday.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-15.
Leading OPS was Harper Sanders with 7 service points and Taylor Williamson with 6 service points.
