Claflin University unveiled their 2012 SIAC East Division Baseball Championship banner before Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial (1-0).

It looked as if the Panthers (0-4) were going to keep the celebration going, grabbing a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play. The Railsplitters plated a lone run in their half of the third inning to pull to within a run 2-1.

The Panthers scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning for a 5-1 lead.

But the visitors scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings and two in the eighth to tie the score at 5. But the Panthers answered in the bottom of the eighth with a run and led 6-5 after eight.

The top of the ninth was a big inning for Lincoln Memorial as the Railsplitters scored three times to forge ahead 8-6. The Railsplitters held the Panthers scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to take the 8-6 victory.

D. Reid (1-0) picked up the win for Lincoln Memorial, while Dezmond Moore (0-1) took the loss for the Panthers.

L. Agosta led the Railsplitters, going 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. A. Rodrigues was 3-5 with a run batted in and three runs scored. C. Baker went 3-5 with a run scored. C. Buckner was 1-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored.

The Panthers were led by Julio Iglesias, going 2-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. Donald Smith went 3-5 with a run scored. Darius Osby was 2-4 with a run batted in. Travis Griffin was 1-5 with a run batted in and a run scored. And Darryl White went 1-2 with a run scored.

The Panthers will return to the diamond Saturday for double-header with Shaw University, beginning at 1 p.m.
