WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Voorhees 63, Converse 54

SPARTANBURG – The Lady Tigers had four players in double figures as they handed the winless Lady Valkyries their fourth home loss of the season on Tuesday.

Voorhees (8-7) opened the game on a 17-0 run that created strong offensive momentum early into the game. Jasmine Middlebrooks would get the Lady Valkyries on the board in the sixth minute with a three-pointer.

The purple and gold struggled from the field, only hitting 29 percent of their shots in the first half compared to 43 percent for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Valkyries went into the locker room down 16 points in the second half.

Converse (0-6) came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders behind sophomore Kayla Garrett. Garrett emerged as the half’s leading scorer, going 2-7 from 3-point range for 10 second-half points. The purple and gold cut the lead to six on a Garrett 3-pointer with 1:15 to play, but with no fouls to give, the Lady Valkyries were unable to close the gap any further down the stretch.

Daiveena Kemp of Orangeburg-Wilkinson led the Lady Tiger attack, netting 4-9 shots and finishing the game with 13 points and three assists. Kierra Patterson was close behind Kemp, going 5-16 from the field and finishing with 12 points.

Amber Johnson flirted with a double-double, but came up just short with 11 points and nine rebounds on the contest.
