SUMTER — Trailing 22-12 at the half, the Lady Confederates did their best to cut Anderson Christian’s lead down. Unfortunately, the Lady Lions proved to be too strong for Andrew Jackson ending their playoff run.

Leading the way for AJA was Kacey Mixon with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Cassidy Hall provided five points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Confederates end the season with a record of 14-6.

Bulldog earns top rookie honors

Freshman forward Daryl Palmer was named Monday the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.

The Timberland High School graduate recorded a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds as he aided the Bulldogs in snapping a 25-game conference losing streak with a 72-70 win over North Carolina A&T. He shot 43-percent from the field (6-14) and added three blocks and one steal in the victory.

Lady Bulldogs return to action

After sweeping Benedict College in a non-conference double header on Friday, the South Carolina State softball team will hit the road today to take on College of Charleston.

S.C. State (7-1) is led by junior pitching ace Vianney Gomez, who is the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. Gomez takes a .053 ERA into the contest.

The Lady Bulldogs are led in hitting by Mikala Johnson and Kourtney Paulo with batting averages of .458 and .429, respectively. Senior Shannon Baity and Johnson have fielding percentages of .980 and .920, respectively. As a team, S.C. State is batting .290 with a .950 fielding percent.

College of Charleston brings a 2-3 overall record into today’s contest. Kelsey Hodgson is batting .308, while Maples Mackenzie is batting .273 for the Lady Cougars who are batting .183 as a team. Hodgson and Mackenzie each are perfect in the field at 100 percent.

Baseball game postponed

Today’s contest between the Panthers and Francis Marion was cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Claflin 77, Paine 70

Tylesha Brown’s 24 points lifted the Lady Panthers past Paine on Senior Night to improve to 5-20 overall.

Laquanda Williams scored 17 in the win for Claflin while Talaya Robinson added 16.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Claflin 71, Paine 60

A 21-point performance by Terrence Bowman helped Claflin come away with their 10th win of the season.

David Glover scored 14 points for the Panthers while Marcellus Dunn added eight.
