Award-winning sportswriter and columnist Bob Gillespie will speak at today’s Orangeburg Touchdown Club meeting at The Cinema.

A native of Orangeburg and 1973 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Gillespie landed his first newspaper job in 1976 at The Times and Democrat and served as sports editor. He left The T&D in 1978 for the Charleston News & Courier and Evening Post, and joined the-then Columbia Record in 1979.

Joining The State in 1988, Gillespie has worked as a sports reporter, columnist and enterprise writer, and has won numerous writing awards from the S.C. Press Association, Associated Press Sports Editors, National Association of Black Journalists and others.

The Orangeburg Touchdown Club will also recognize its Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week: Lake Marion quarterback Deriante Jenkins and Hunter-Kinard-Tyler cornerback Michael Edwards. The Cinema will open for the buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m.
