The momentum built by the Orangeburg-Wilkinson boys basketball team following the holiday break took a bump with last Friday’s 54-52 overtime loss at Hanahan.

Despite the setback which snapped a six-game winning streak, the Bruins still remain in control of their destiny in Region 8-AAA with four games remaining. Now back in the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association Class 3-A rankings after a one-month absence, O-W (12-9, 5-1) heads to Stall tonight at 7:30 p.m. seeking one of three victories needed to wrap up the region title and gain the homefield advantage through the third round of the S.C. High School League playoffs.

The top-ranked Bruinettes (19-1, 6-0) find themselves with an opportunity to obtain a similar luxury. It has more than served O-W well as it has not lost a home playoff game since March 1997 - a span of 24 consecutive games.

The Bruinettes can clinch their 24th region title and first in Class 3-A with a win tonight over the Lady Warriors at 6 p.m. and Friday at home against Hilton Head Island. In the Jan. 11 meeting, O-W routed then-undefeated and 10th-ranked Stall 95-36.

Class 2-A boys number-one Lake Marion also finds itself in the driver’s seat for a region championship and homecourt advantage in the post-season. Winners of 10 straight, the Gators (17-1, 6-0) hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with Lake City and can clinch the Region 7-AAA title with a win tonight at Lee Central and Friday at home against Timberland.
