6 - Morgan State defeats South Carolina State 73-68 in men’s basketball, handing the Bulldogs a school-record ninth straight loss. Late in the game, Bears’ head coach Todd Bozeman gave what appeared to be a hard shove at point guard Larry Bastfield. Following the game, Morgan State administrators placed him on an indefinite suspension.

16 - University of South Carolina baseball coach Ray Tanner speaks at the 10th annual Orangeburg Touchdown Club banquet at The Cinema. ... The Pittsburgh Steelers sign former S.C. State linebacker Marshall McFadden to a reserve/future contract.

17 - Lexington routs Orangeburg-Wilkinson 64-47 in boys’ basketball to snap the Bruins’ 13-game winning streak.

21 - Former South Carolina State safety Christian Thompson competes in the East-West Shrine Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla.

24 - Former S.C. State linebacker Marshall McFadden signs a future contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

FEBRUARY

1 - National Signing Day produces eight T&D Region players inking letters of intent highlighted by Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s Martin Aiken (Clemson), Calhoun County’s Mark Irick (Virginia Tech) and Saints’ teammates Javonte Brown, Clyde Johnson and Jake Scott (all to South Carolina State). The Bulldogs picked up 23 signees, including quarterbacks Joey Copeland (Gaffney) and Adrian Kollack (Spartanburg) and fullback Virgil Smalls (Goose Creek).

6 - The South Carolina State men’s basketball team defeats Longwood 74-58 to snap a school-record 16-game losing streak.

7 - The Orangeburg-Wilkinson girls’ basketball team edges Lexington 59-54 to win the Region 5-AAAA title, the program’s 23rd overall. ... Two-sport athlete Jadar Johnson of Orangeburg-Wilkinson verbally commits to Clemson.

8 - South Carolina State releases its official 2012 football schedule, which includes two Division I games in consecutive weeks against Arizona (Sept. 15) and Texas A&M (Sept. 22).

10 - The Calhoun County girls’ basketball team routs Hunter-Kinard-Tyler 53-18 to wrap up its first-ever Region 4-A title.

11 - Bamberg-Ehrhardt wrestling wins a second straight state Class A title with a 52-23 win over Abbeville.

12 - Former Orangeburg-Wilkinson girls’ basketball coach and athletics director John Brunson is named an inductee to the S.C. Athletics Directors Association Hall of Fame.

14 - Former Orangeburg-Wilkinson and University of Georgia cornerback Tim Jennings resigns with the Chicago Bears.

22 - Edisto’s Brice Johnson is named the S.C. Gatorade Player of the Year for the second straight year.

25 - Orangeburg-Wilkinson defeats Goose Creek 51-43 to win the Class 4-A Lower State girls’ basketball title for the second time in four years. In Greenville, the Denmark-Olar girls are outscored 16-1 over the final 5:57 in losing the Class A Upper State final to Abbeville 54-51. ... Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s Mark Moody (170 pounds) and Lan Hiers (126 pounds) and Edisto’s Xavier Johnson (132 pounds) wins individual gold medals at the S.C. High School League wrestling championships. The same day sees Red Raider Damien Johnson compete in a “special” state title match with Hilton Head’s Chip Mullen, an athlete born with Down syndrome who still managed to play football as well.

27 - Former O-W girls’ basketball coach the late Edward Pellman is one of four coaches named to the 2012 S.C. Basketball Coaches Association’s Coaches Hall of Fame. In 19 seasons, Pellman won 401 games, seven Upper State titles and four state championships.

28 - Former South Carolina State free safety Christian Thompson has a strong showing at the NFL combines. He earns “Top Performer” status at his position in the 40-yard dash (4.50 seconds) and grades high in the 20-yard shuffle (4.13 seconds) and 60-yard TD shuffle (11.72 seconds).

MARCH

1 - The South Carolina State men’s basketball team loses 82-71 to Delaware State to finish 0-16 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. It marks the fourth time in conference history a team went winless in MEAC play.

2 - Zondria Ritter scores 14 points in a losing effort for O-W as the Bruinettes fall 61-29 to Dutch Fork in the Class 4-A title game.

3 - Former South Carolina State guard and Hunter-Kinard-Tyler boys’ basketball coach Aric Samuel leads his alma mater Hartsville to a 69-56 win over Southside to claim the Class 3-A basketball title.

6 - The S.C. State men’s basketball team sees its 2011-12 season end with a first-round MEAC tournament loss to Bethune-Cookman 62-53. It is the second straight year the Wildcats post three wins in a season over the Bulldogs (5-26), who set a single-season school record for lowest number of victories and most losses.

31 - Bamberg-Ehrhardt linebakcer K.C. Crosby is among the first players nominated for the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
