Claflin softball sweeps

Bloomfield College 

Kayla Cato hit a grand slam home run in game one of a non-conference doubleheader as the Claflin University softball team swept Bloomfield College, 8-1 and 4-1, at Adden Street Field in Orangeburg on Wednesday.

With the wins, Claflin improved to 7-13 overall. Bloomfield remains winless at 0-6.

Cato finished the day with four hits, including three in game one, to go along with three runs scored.

Chelise Morman had four hits with three runs scored, and Jamelah Thomas had three hits and two runs scored for Claflin.

Tiaria Norman picked up a win in game one and a save in game two. Yemaya Rich picked up her first win of the season in the circle in game two.

The Lady Panthers knocked out a combined 18 hits on the day.

Claflin will open Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, when they travel Augusta, Georgia to take on Paine College.

Claflin baseball set to

host Saginaw Valley State

The Claflin University Panthers will host Saginaw Valley State University in a mid-week baseball game on Thursday at Mirmow Field at 3 p.m.

Claflin enter the non-conference contest carrying a 2-16 record, after being swept in a three-game series by The College of Saint Rose over the weekend.

The Panthers are currently riding a four-game losing streak, with the last win coming on Feb. 26 at home against Bluefield State College, 21-6.

Claflin is led at the plate by Darrell Langston with team-high numbers in home runs (4), hits (27), RBI (17) and batting average (.360).

Three other Panthers are hitting over the .300 mark -- Johnathan Parnell II (.348), Clyde Parker (.313) and Grayland Fowler (.311).

The Panthers pitching staff is led by Cleveland Westbrook, who has picked up both wins for the Panthers.

Saginaw Valley State enters the week at 6-2 with a doubleheader scheduled against Limestone College on Wednesday (Feb. 7) on the road.

The Cardinals are led by Jordan Swiss with a batting average of .690 followed by Adam Fitzgibbon at .531 in this season.

The top hurlers for Saginaw Valley State pitching staff are Mason Schwellenback at 2-0 and Grant Jebbia with three saves.
