in AP poll; USC

Clemson University men’s basketball team finished No. 20 in the country in the final Associated Press poll of the season released on Monday.

It is the first time Clemson has been ranked in the final AP men’s basketball poll since the 2008-09 season when Clemson was 24th.

The Tigers (23-9, 11-7 ACC) were ranked as high as 11th in the country this season – its highest mark since being ranked 10th on Feb. 2, 2009.

The USA Today poll as Clemson up to 18th from 20.

Virginia remains the unanimous No. 1 in the final AP Top 25 poll. The Cavaliers (31-2) earned all 65 first-place votes in Monday's poll to remain on top for the fifth straight week.

The top four teams in the AP poll matched the selection committee's No. 1 seeds. Villanova won the Big East Tournament and stayed at No. 2, while Xavier was third and Kansas jumped five spots to fourth.

Carolina women

UConn finished No. 1 in The Associated Press women's basketball poll for the fifth straight year.

The Huskies (32-0) enter the NCAA Tournament as the lone unbeaten team and went wire-to-wire as the unanimous top team.

Baylor, Louisville, Mississippi State and Notre Dame followed UConn in the poll. Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, UCLA and Ohio State round out the first 10 teams.

Clemson hosts

Charleston Southern

Clemson hosts former Tiger Adam Ward and Charleston Southern on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Charleston Southern is 6-11). Clemson is 15-1 and ranked No. 2 by Collegiate Baseball.

Pitchers are to be LH Jaret Bennett (CSU) and RH Holt Jones (CU).

Clemson swept Georgia Tech in a three-game home series by a combined score of 23-7 last weekend.

Charleston Southern is led by Ward, a second-year head coach, who lettered as a catcher at Clemson from 2007-09.

The Buccaneers were swept at home by Holy Cross last weekend.

Beer named ACC

Co-Player of Week

Clemson junior Seth Beer was named ACC Co-Player of the Week.

Beer led Clemson to a 5-0 record last week, including a three-game sweep of Georgia Tech by hitting a home run in each of the three wins over the Yellow Jackets. Beer was 4-for-11 with three homers, four RBIs, five runs and a .500 on-base percentage in the series and totaled at least one run and one hit in each of the five games during the week. On the season, he is hitting .286 with 17 runs, two doubles, six homers, 12 RBIs, a .447 on-base percentage and a steal in 16 games.

The South Carolina football program will hold its annual Pro Timing Day at Williams-Brice Stadium on Tuesday, March 20, when 12 draft-eligible former Gamecock players are slated to work out for NFL coaches and scouts.

Those former Gamecock players expected to participate include: Cory Helms, Hayden Hurst, Ulric Jones, JaMarcus King, Alan Knott, Chris Lammons, Skai Moore, D.J. Park, Dante Sawyer, Demetrius Smalls, D.J. Smith and Taylor Stallworth.
