Claflin softball picks up first win of season

The Claflin University softball team defeated Southern Wesleyan 8-0 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at the Adden Street Field in Orangeburg to pick up their first win of the season.  The Lady Panthers fell to the Knights 3-1 in game two.

The split takes Claflin season record to 1-7 while Southern Wesleyan improves to 2-6.

LaKaylin Lee paced the Lady Panthers on the day, finishing the doubleheader with four hits, including two doubles in game one, with two runs a RBI and two walks.

Chelise Morman had two runs with one hit and Kayla Cato scored one run with one hit and one RBI on the day.

Claflin will return to action this Sunday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Greenwood, S.C. to face Lander University in a non-conference doubleheader.

Gamecocks honor Legends

COLUMBIA -- South Carolina head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin and his staff will host the 2018 Legends Weekend, Friday, Feb. 16-Saturday, Feb. 17, in Columbia. All Legends in attendance will be honored at halftime of Saturday’s contest against No. 10/11 Auburn (3:30 p.m./SEC Network), and a special Final Four ring ceremony will take place at halftime for former Gamecocks PJ Dozier, Duane Notice and Sindarius Thornwell, who will all be in attendance.

Claflin falls in Sunday finale

Virginia State University withstood a ninth-inning rally by Claflin University, edging the Panthers 14-13 in a non-conference baseball game Sunday at Mirmow Field.

The victory gave Virginia State the series at 2-1 and improved the Trojans to 4-1-1 on the season, while Claflin dropped to 1-6.

Claflin will return action this weekend, traveling to St. Petersburg, Fla. for a three-game series with Eckerd College. Action gets underway Saturday with a double-header at 1 p.m. The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at noon.

Scott honored as recruiter

CLEMSON — Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott has been honored by Rivals.com and 247 Sports for his excellence in recruiting in 2017-18. Rivals.com named Scott one of the top 25 recruiters in the nation, and 247 Sports ranked him as the Best Recruiter in the ACC.

It marked the fourth straight year Scott had been named to the list of Top 25 recruiters by Rivals.com.
