South Carolina State will hold its annual Youth/ROTC Day Saturday at Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium from 8 a.m.-noon.

The Department of Athletics has extended a special welcome for all youth to share the “Bulldog Experience” by offering a discounted game ticket of $10 to those 17 and under and to youth groups (civic, community, fraternal organizations, churches, etc.) to attend the S.C. State-Johnson C. Smith football game at 2 p.m.

The halftime show will feature the renowned Marching 101 Band and a JROTC Rifle Drill Exhibition.

Youth and ROTC Day is designed to encourage elementary, middle and high school students to visit the campus and experience all that the university has to offer while enjoying a football game.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center and continues for groups at the football practice field.

Bulldog Challenge activities begin at 9 a.m. at the practice field, with events including soccer, tennis and cheerleading clinics.

At the same time, university and department displays will be underway at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

From 11 to noon, all participants will gather in the stadium for performances by the S.C. State cheerleaders, Marching 101 Drum Line and more.

Claflin volleyball returns to action

After taking a short hiatus from practice and competition due to Hurricane Irma, the Claflin University volleyball team will return to action Saturday when the Lady Panthers travel to Aiken to take on the Pacers of USC-Aiken. First serve is 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center on the campus of USC-Aiken.

Claflin takes a 0-2 overall record into the NCAA Division II non-conference match.

The Lady Panthers are led on the season by graduate transfer Diara Lewis and junior Jamie Dobson, who has nine kills and two blocks apiece. Junior Jordan Wallace has eight kills, while Jewel Moody leads the team in blocks with three.

USC-Aiken has won seven straight matches since opening the season with back-to-back losses.

Claflin will travel to Birmingham, Ala., next Thursday-Saturday (Sept. 21-23) to participate in the 2017 SIAC Crossover.

Carolina baseball opens fall practice

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina baseball team will begin fall team practice on Friday and will have scrimmages open to the public on Saturday and Sunday at Carolina Stadium. Saturday's scrimmage is scheduled for noon with first pitch on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Clemson baseball opens fall practice

CLEMSON -- The 2018 Tigers begin fall practice on Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers play two intrasquad scrimmages this weekend at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, six-inning games on Saturday (11:30 a.m.) and Sunday (1:30 p.m.).
