BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Claflin University men’s basketball team will face Tuskegee University on Tuesday in the opening round of the 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference basketball tournament.
Tipoff is 5:45 p.m. EST at the Bill Harris Arena inside the Birmingham Crossplex. Ala. The single-elimination tournament runs Feb. 26-March 3. Live stats are available at http://stat.center/scorerstable-live.html.
Claflin, 21-6, will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the East Division while Tuskegee, 7-21, enters as the No. 6 in the West Division.
This will be the second meeting of the season between the two. In Orangeburg on Jan. 6, Claflin defeated Tuskegee 73-51.
Benjamin “Tre” Williams led the Panthers in scoring with 16 points, followed by Austin Lawton with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Jaleel Charles scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds along with four blocked shots for Claflin, while Tondric Johnson also added nine points.
Williams and Johnson continue their hot shooting from three-point land, combining for seven. Williams had four and Johnson added three. The duo knocked down five apiece against Miles College last week.
Tuskegee was led by James Eads with 15 points and Jason Pasley at 13.
Charles leads the Panthers in scoring and rebounding at 14 points and eight rebounds. Williams is the only other Claflin player averaging in the double figures at 12.9 points.
Tuskegee is led in scoring and rebounding by Gregg Boyd and Jason Pasley who are averaging 19 and 5.0, respectively.
A Claflin win would send the Panthers to a 4:15 p.m. game Thursday against the Lane/Paine winner.
The Claflin women will face Lane College in the opening round at 3:30 p.m. EST) Tuesday. Claflin, 15-12, will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the East Division while Lane, 5-21, enters as the No. 6 in the West Division.
This will be the second meeting of the season between the two. In the earlier meeting in Memphis, Tenn. (Nov. 25, 2017) Claflin defeated Lane 59-38.
Dominque Williams, who was named to the 2018 SIAC Second Team All-Conference, paced three Claflin players in double-figures with 15 points. She was 8 of 11 from the field including a three-point basket.
Joy Okeke scored 13 points for the Lady Panthers, while Ashley Fields added 10 points and team-high seven rebounds.
Jhanice Stokes added seven points and six rebounds for Claflin in the win.
Kristy Armwood was the lone double-figure scorer for Lane with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Williams leads four players in scoring in double figures for Claflin at 12.7 points per game. Joy Okeke is averaging 11.3 while Jhanice Stokes and Ashley Fields are averaging 10.4 points per outing. Stokes and Ashley are averaging 7.9 and 7.6 rebounds per game, respectively.
If the Claflin women advance, they will face LeMoyne-Owen, the No. 2 seed in the West Division, at 2 p.m. EST Thursday. LeMoyne-Owen received a bye in the opening round of the tournament.
