The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division baseball series between Claflin University and Albany State University (ASU) this weekend ended with each team winning a game.
The two teams split a Friday doubleheader at Mirmow Field as Claflin won the opener 5-2 in eight innings, while ASU took the second game 8-7.
The third game of the series was rained out Saturday with ASU leading 4-0 in the third inning. A makeup date has been set for the contest.
With the series tie, Claflin improved to 11-23 overall and 7-3 in the conference while ASU pushed its record to 16-14, 7-4 in the SIAC.
The Panthers will continue their homestand in a mid-week non-conference contest against North Greenville University on Wednesday at 6 p.m. followed by a SIAC weekend series with Clark Atlanta University.
In the first game, Johnathan Parnell II belted a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth-inning to give Claflin to the 5-2 win.
The home run, Parnell third of the season, came with two outs and brought home Harold Smith and Elliott Melton, pinch runner for Clyde Parker.
The contest was sent into extra innings at 2-2 when Grayland Fowler hit a two-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh to score Darrel Langston.
ASU had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun from Trey McMillian.
The Panthers scored the game’s first run in the fourth-inning as Parker hit a RBI single to score Jalen Sprull.
Claflin held the advantage until the sixth inning when ASU pulled even at 1-1 on Nic Griggs run-scoring sacrifice fly.
Langston finished game one with three hit for the Panthers, while Fowler contributed two.
Dillon Parker, who evened his season record at 3-3, pitched eight strong innings. He allowed just four hits and struck out six batters in earning the win.
Tristan Rice took the loss for ASU.
In the second game, ASU scored twice in the top of the seventh-inning in defeating Claflin 8-7.
The Golden Rams jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of first inning, only to see Langston tie the contest with his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the Panthers half of the inning.
McElveen later put the Panthers ahead at 3-2 in the inning with an RBI single.
The second inning saw ASU tie the contest at 3-3 and move on top at 4-3 in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Panthers erased the one run deficit with four runs to go up 7-4. Sprull provided the big blow, a two-run single, followed by Craig Hopkins RBI single. Eric McElveen hit into a double-play that scored Hopkins from third base for Claflin final run of the inning.
The Golden Rams put up two runs in the top of the sixth to pull within two runs.
Langston led Claflin at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included a two-run homer and two runs scored, followed by Sprull at 3-for-4, two runs scored and 2 RBIs.
McElveen had a hit and two RBIs for the Panthers.
ASU was led by Riliani Familia at 3-3 with 3 RBIs.
Rice, 3-3, picked up the win for Albany State, while Eric Dubose, 1-4, was the losing pitcher for Claflin.
