WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Central State University (CSU) withstood a late fourth quarter rally by the Lady Panthers in defeating Claflin University 59-54 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) basketball game Saturday.
The loss dropped Claflin to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the SIAC, while Central State is now 10-3 and 5-1.
Jhanice Stokes led the Lady Panthers with her fourth double-double of the season, 12 points and 13 rebounds, to go with four block shots. Dominique Williams contributed 12 points for Claflin, while Ashley Fields added 11 points and four assists.
Joy Okeke chipped in nine points for the Lady Panthers, while Zakera Chadmon and Fields pulled down seven rebounds each.
CSU only had only one player in double figures, Chavon Banks with 10 points and eight rebounds.
In the fourth quarter, Claflin trailed by eight at 55-47 with 3:19 left. The Lady Panthers outscored CSU 7-4 the rest of the way, but it was no enough as the Lady Marauders held on for the home win.
Claflin pulled within three points twice down the stretch, 55-53 at the 1:04 mark and 57-54 with 15 seconds left.
The Lady Panthers did manage to outscore CSU in the second half 32-26 of play after trailing 32-22 at the intermission.
Claflin's largest lead of the game came with 2:10 left in the first quarter at 15-12.
CSU biggest advantage took place in the third quarter at 36-22 lead with 9:15 left in the period.
In the contest, the Lady Panthers were 0-for-4 from behind the three-point line compared to 6-of-22 for CSU.
Claflin also had trouble at the free throw line, connecting on 8-of-17, and turned the ball over 23 times that resulted in 26 points for the Lady Marauders.
The Lady Panthers will wrap up their two-game road trip to start the second-half of the season against Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Ky., Monday (Jan. 1) at 5:30 p.m.
