BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Claflin University volleyball team fought from down 2-1 on Thursday morning but came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Benedict College in an elimination game of the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships in the Birmingham Crossplex,
Benedict won by scores of 19-25, 25-15, 25-23, 18-25 and 15-13.
With the loss, the Lady Panthers end the season with an 8-21 overall record.
Benedict advanced to face LeMoyne-Owen College.
Despite the loss, Claflin ended the game with three players with double-digit kills and three players with double-digit digs.
Leading the way offensively for the Lady Panthers was Diara Lewis with 16 kills. Jewel Moody and Jamie Dobson each contributed 13 kills in the contest. Moody also led the team in blocks with 5 total.
Gabrielle Williams and Ashleigh Green also contributed in the kills department with seven and six, respectively.
In the back row, it was libero Jhi Piper-Murles leading the way defensively with 14 digs.
Kiana Ware picked up 13 digs and Chania Rispress, who led the offense with 51 set assists, had 10 digs in the loss.
Collectively, Claflin finished the game with 60 kills, seven service aces, 68 digs and seven team blocks.
Benedict was led by Kiarra Pettway with 15 kills. Arneshia Parrish had 13 kills while Torcealon Kelley and Adrionna Washington contributed 12 and 11, respectively.
With the back-and-forth nature throughout the contest, the teams finished 23 ties and 11 lead changes through the five sets.
