GREENVILLE, Tenn. — The Claflin University softball team dropped a non-conference road doubleheader to Tusculum College on Friday, falling 13-5 and 11-1, respectively.
Claflin remains winless on the season at 0-6. It was opening day for Tusculum (2-0 record).
Tusculum bats were hot early as the Pioneers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings, scoring five in the first inning and four in the second inning.
Claflin managed to find some offense in the top of the third. After Jamelah Thomas drew a one out walk, LaKaylin Lee singled before Kayla Cato knocked out a triple to bring in Thomas and Lee for the Lady Panthers first runs of the game.
Norman followed Cato’s triple with an RBI-single to score Cato and cut the lead to six.
Tusculum added four additional runs in the fourth to take a 13-3 lead into the fifth inning.
Lee, who had two runs with two hits in the loss, led off the top of the fifth with a triple and scored off a sacrifice fly by Jasmine Squirewell for the Lady Panthers fourth run of the game.
With two outs, Norman doubled and was followed by a single down the right field line from Chelise Morman. The second hit scored Najila Miller, who pinch ran for Norman, for Claflin's final run of the five-inning game.
Lee was the losing pitcher of record for Claflin.
Tusculum bats remained hot in game two, as they put up four runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth inning. The Pioneers' defense was equally as solid, holding Claflin to just three hits without committing an error.
The one bright spot for the Lady Panthers was a solo home run to left field by Morman for Claflin, standing as the only run for the visitors in the five-inning game.
Norman, was the losing pitcher in game two.
The Claflin game at Limestone scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled due to heavy rain/thunderstorms in the forecast. The Lady Panthers will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Southern Wesleyan in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Adden Street Field.
