The Claflin University men’s basketball team pushed its win streak to 11 as they cruised past Spring Hill, 79-52, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) men’s basketball contest in Tullis Arena Saturday.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 12-1 overall and remain perfect in the SIAC at 5-0.
Spring Hill dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the SIAC.
All five starters scored for Claflin and 10 of the 15 players who saw action scored points. The Panthers finished the contest with five double-digit scorers led by Austin Lawton with 14.
Triston Thompson had 14 points while Jaleel Charles and Albert “Trey” Miller dropped in 11 apiece. Charles also led the team in rebounding with seven.
Jordan Jones rounded out the double-digit scoring, coming off the bench to score 10.
Spring Hill was led by Gresyn Rogers with 14 points, including 10 in the second half.
Claflin opened the second half on a 10-2 run over the first six-minutes to stretch its lead to 34, 55-21. The Panthers pushed their lead to 37, 62-25, at the 10-minute mark before Spring Hill managed any form of offense.
Over the next four minutes, the Badgers managed to cut the deficit to 29, 68-39, and would get as close as 25 with just over two minutes remaining before falling by the 27-point margin.
Claflin scored the first two points of the game but Spring Hill answered, scoring the next four points for the two-point lead, which proved to be the only lead of the contest for the Badgers.
The Panthers then went on a 10-0 run and never looked back. Claflin pushed its lead to 19-6 with 13:26 remaining in the opening half, forcing Spring Hill into its second timeout of the half.
Claflin kept the pressure on, going up by as many as 19 on two occasions before owning the 24-point lead at intermission, 43-19.
Claflin will take a break for the Christmas holiday and return to action Saturday, Dec. 30, against SIAC foe Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.
