While the 2012-13 school year has officially ended, prep football fans are now making plans for the upcoming season.

The S.C. High School League website has released the fall 2013 prep football schedules. Once again, the action kicks off early locally with eight T&D Region teams opening the season the weekend of Week Zero.

Highlighting the matchups on Aug. 23 is Orangeburg-Wilkinson playing host to Bamberg-Ehrhardt. Since starting the series in 2010, the Red Raiders have won all three meetings against the Bruins and are riding a 10-game winning streak in season openers.

While B-E (10-2) finished with the T&D Region’s best overall record last season, it was Hunter-Kinard-Tyler which advanced the furthest in the post-season. After coming within a game of reaching its first-ever Class A final, the Trojans look to build upon their past success starting Aug. 23 at Denmark-Olar.

Other key matchups taking place locally this season:

  • Bamberg-Ehrhardt at Woodland (Sept. 6) – The Wolverines look to avenge last year’s crushing Class 2-A playoff loss to the Red Raiders in which they squandered a 21-point lead.
  • Orangeburg-Wilkinson at Calhoun County (Sept. 20) – New Saints’ head coach Bill Kimrey renews a rivalry with the Bruins dating back to his days at Dutch Fork High School.
  • Branchville at Lincoln (Sept. 27) – The annual battle of the “Yellow Jackets” have produced the four non-forfeit victories for Branchville since reviving football in 2008.
  • Hanahan at Orangeburg-Wilkinson & Silver Bluff at Bamberg-Ehrhardt (Oct. 4) – The Bruins and Red Raiders open their respective region play at home against the defending champions.
  • Williston-Elko at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler (Oct. 11) – The Trojans get the first shot at the defending Region 4-A champions.
  • Woodland at Bishop England (Oct. 25) – The road to a first-ever region title for the Wolverines could potentially go through the Port City.
  • Bamberg-Ehrhardt at Edisto (Nov. 1) – The Cougars renew their Highway 301 rivalry with the Red Raiders in a season-ending game which could have Region 5-AA title implications.

Along with the regular season, at least two preseason Jamborees are confirmed on the SCHSL website. The Region 4-A Jamboree will take place Aug. 15 at Williston-Elko High School, with the annual Willie Jeffries Classic Jamboree set for the next night at O-W High School.
