The South Carolina Gamecocks are the seventh-best team in the country and the Clemson Tigers are eighth, according to the preseason USA Today Sports top 25 football coaches’ poll announced Thursday

The ranking is the highest in preseason in USC history, bettering last year’s No. 9 preseason ranking. The Gamecocks garnered 1,136 points to rank between Texas A&M (1,215) and Clemson (1,047) in the coaches’ poll.

The Gamecocks finished the 2012 season with an 11-2 record for the second straight year. They were ranked seventh in the final coaches’ poll, their highest finish in school history.

The 2013 ranking for Clemson is the highest in preseason since 1988, when the Tigers were fourth in both the AP and Coaches (UPI at the time) polls.

This marks the second consecutive year Clemson has been ranked in the preseason top 25. The Tigers were 14th in both preseason polls last year.

Clemson finished 11th in AP and ninth in USA Today last season. Clemson is the highest-ranked ACC team in the poll. Florida State, a Clemson opponent at Death Valley on Oct. 19, is ranked 12th.

This is the eighth time Clemson has been ranked in the top 10 of at least one preseason poll. The highest preseason ranking Clemson has had is No. 4. Clemson was ranked fourth by Associated Press in 1984 and fourth in 1988 by both polls.

This marks the 30th consecutive poll that South Carolina and Clemson have been ranked in the top 25.

Clemson will open the season against fifth-ranked Georgia at Death Valley. It will be the first time Clemson has opened a season at home against a top 5 team. The previous high ranked team Clemson has faced at home in the opener is an11th-ranked Georgia team in 2003.

The Gamecocks’ first game is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 29, in Columbia against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Alabama is the preseason favorite with 1,545 points and 58 of the 62 first-place votes. Ohio State is second with 1,427 points and three first-place votes.

Two Pac-12 teams, Oregon and Stanford, hold the No. 3 and 4 positions, just ahead of three SEC squads, Georgia, Texas A&M and South Carolina.

Florida comes in at No. 10, giving the SEC five schools among the nation’s top 10.
