A 19-year-old St. Matthews resident died in a wreck in Orangeburg County late Saturday night, according to Cpl. Bob Beres of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The victim was driving west on Whisperwood Drive at approximately 11 p.m. when his 2002 Ford Mustang struck the left side of a westbound 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck that was attempting to make a left turn into a private drive.

The Mustang veered off the road, overturned and struck a tree. Its driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died, Beres said.

He said the driver’s name would have to be obtained from the Orangeburg County coroner’s office. No one from that office immediately returned a message Sunday afternoon.

The pickup truck’s 17-year-old driver and his passenger were both wearing seat belts and neither required medical assistance.

Beres said the incident is still under investigation by the Highway Patrol and its Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
