BAMBERG — Two classic competitions are set for Friday and Saturday, April 26-27, in Bamberg during the inaugural Old Friends Barbeque Cook-off and Car Show at the Jim Thomas 4-H Club Horse Arena on George Street next to Paw Paw Country Club.

The two-day event is being held to raise money for the Joe Land Scholarship Fund, which helps provide financial support for a Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School senior heading off to college each fall.

A total of 27 cook teams have registered for the contest, and organizers of the event say they guarantee there will be plenty of food to sample. Mary Bray Mehrzad, co-chair, said the public should not miss out on this opportunity.

“There is going to be so much to eat,” Mehrzad said, “we just need people to eat it.”

The gates will open at 5 p.m. Friday, and sampling will start at 7:30 p.m. Bracelets can be purchased for $5 on Friday night, which will allow sampling of all the competitors’ food, which will include wings and chili. Winners of the wings and chili cook-off will receive a trophy and $100.

Gates will open at 8 a.m. Saturday, with sampling staring at 10 a.m. Saturday’s bracelets for sampling will be $10, and barbecue and ribs will be the fare for the day. The ribs contest winners receiving $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. Barbecue winners will receive $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place.

Car Show registration is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Shane Black, organizer, encourages anyone interested or who has a car they would like to enter to show up.

“We are expecting a lot of Modal As and Model Ts, sports from the ’60s and ’70s, along with classics for the ’40s and ’50s,” Black said, adding that he’s anticipating a big turnout for the show. “We’ve had people from Orangeburg, Walterboro, Ehrhardt and other areas say they were going to enter the show.”

Trophies will be awarded for first, second, third and the top 10. There will also be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing for car entries, Black said.
