Day-Sha Stewart, a South Carolina State University sophomore and early childhood education major from Columbia, will be crowned Miss Homecoming at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26, at during a private luncheon.

After participating in S.C. State Homecoming events previously, Stewart decided to make the university her home. She said she admires the sense of community and Bulldog pride that surrounds the campus.

Stewart, a member of S.C. State’s softball team, decided to compete for Miss Homecoming because she wanted to make a positive impact on campus.

“As Miss Homecoming, I am honored to represent our talented football team and the university as we celebrate every aspect of this illustrious institution,” Stewart said. “I strive to encourage other young women to get involved on campus, uphold tenacity and to remain humble throughout the process.”

S.C. State has helped shaped Stewart by affording her the opportunity to learn from and interact with a diverse group of individuals. She said she has also grown professionally during her tenure at S.C. State.

Stewart believes that building positive relationships is important in any field, along with unwavering professionalism. Early mornings, overcoming obstacles and having to wear professional attire to class are also preparing her for the workforce. Stewart hopes to instill in her future students the importance of being professional as well.

Her greatest inspiration is her mother, former Homecoming Queen of W.J. Keenan High School ‘92 Keshia Stewart, who encourages her to seek improvement each day and remain focused on her goals. She is thankful for the support of her family, friends, coaches and the S.C. State football team as she balances campus involvement with achieving academic success.

Upon graduation, Stewart will work as an early childhood education teacher and give back to the community with the gift of knowledge. She plans to earn her master’s degree after acquiring experience as a teacher. Stewart aspires to be a positive role model well beyond her undergraduate career.
