BAMBERG - Just as the harvest season brings food to the table, Bamberg County's annual Wild Game Banquet brings people from across the county, state and region together for a unique feast each November.

This year's banquet will again be hosted by the Edisto Electric Cooperative in Bamberg. Organizers encourage area residents to mark their calendars now and plan to take part in the Tuesday, Nov. 20 smorgasbord.

The Wild Game Banquet Committee held a planning meeting Thursday to discuss the details of this year's feast, which is free to the public.

A Remington Model 700 rifle, valued at around $500, will be given away during a drawing the night of the banquet. Raffle tickets for the gun are now on sale for $2 per chance to help offset the cost of the banquet.

The menu for the night is enough to make anyone's mouth water. Steamed oysters, fried quail, venison and alligator tail will start off the evening, with parched and boiled peanuts on the side. Lemonade will be served up out of a big wooden barrel. The main meal will include big, juicy shrimp, creamy coleslaw, slow-cooked grits, catfish stew, chicken bog and local barbecue. Live music, provided by a local band, will fill the air.

It's hard to put a price on a meal as finger-licking good as this.

From its beginning as a celebration of Farm City Week, the Wild Game banquet has been free to the public. Donations from local industries, businesses and individuals, along with dedicated volunteers, continue to make the banquet possible each year. This year's rifle raffle will help offset the rising costs of putting on the event, which normally costs approximately $5,000, organizers say.

David Felkel, president and CEO of Edisto Electric Cooperative, is this year's finance chair for the banquet and will be glad to receive monetary donations at the Co-op on Calhoun Street in Bamberg.

Checks can also be made out to the Bamberg County Wild Game Banquet and mailed to the Bamberg County Extension Office at P. O. Box 299, Bamberg, SC 29003.

Raffle tickets are now being sold by committee members and several local business. Ticket purchasers do not need to be present to win. To purchase tickets for a chance to win the rifle, go by or call the following businesses or individuals:
