A passerby early Saturday reported finding a body hanging by a noose from a tree at an abandoned house on Summers Avenue, Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Capt. Ed Connor said Saturday.

Police responded to the 7:05 a.m. call to find a deceased 26-year-old white male hanging by the neck from a tree within view of the street. Suicide is suspected in the death of the man, whose name was not released, Connor said.

The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene near Park Street. A ruling is pending, Connor said.

It appears the man climbed the tree with a noose and then jumped from the tree, Connor said. All indications point to suicide.

DPS is conducting an investigation into the man’s background and medical history, Connor said.
