ST. MATTHEWS – A newcomer to the area has died, Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth said Sunday afternoon.

James Markel, 68, recently moved to Orangeburg from Shelby, Ohio.

At about 11 a.m. Friday, Markel was traveling west on Kennerly Road on a 1986 Harley-Davidson motorcycle behind a Chevrolet four-door being driven by Whitney Nimmons.

The Chevrolet slowed down and Markel attempted to pass, but collided with the Chevrolet as it turned left into a private driveway, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.

Markel was not wearing a helmet, Collins added.

Prayers to the family. And, further proof that the highways are more dangerous than other things.
