A little over a year ago, Hurricane Matthew took a destructive path through South Carolina.

In Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5, schools were closed for eight days as heavy winds and rain washed out roads, downed trees and damaged buildings.

Flood waters entered Mellichamp Elementary School’s library, destroying books, carpets, shelves and furnishings.

Although the loss of the library was a setback for the school and its students, Principal Hayward Jean and the staff at Mellichamp Elementary chose to view their situation as an opportunity to rebuild with a vision of what the library could become.

With the generous support of South Carolina companies including McWaters Inc., Milliken & Company and many individual donors, the new library at Mellichamp Elementary School will re-open to students with a dedication event at 10 a.m. today.
