VANCE -- A swearing-in ceremony for newly re-elected Mayor Michael Aiken Sr. and Town Councilman Douglas Chapman and newly elected Councilwoman Dorothy Glover was held at Vance Town Council's Nov. 28 meeting.

Magistrate Samuel Daily administered the oath of office to the three officials.

During the meeting, Aiken reminded everyone that the Vance Christmas Parade will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17. Parade entries will be accepted until 1 p.m. on Dec. 15, the mayor said.

He also reminded those attending about the Real ID, which is now required of anyone wishing to travel by plane or gain access to federal facilities. Vance has flyers that detail the requirements for getting a Real ID on the information table at town hall, Aiken noted.

The Vance Fire Department responded to 24 calls in November, it was reported. For the year, the department has responded to a total of 340 calls. The fire department will hold its annual holiday party at 6 p.m. on Dec. 9, it was announced.

The council meeting's November agenda featured reminders about an upcoming event and services available to residents of Vance and the surrounding area. These included:

  • The eight-hour Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Defensive Driving Classes can get graduates a four-point reduction in their driver’s Motor Vehicle Record. The next classes will take place from 6-10 p.m. on Dec. 5 and Dec. 7. Classes cost $69 each. Participants must also purchase a Defensive Driving book at a cost of $23. Anyone interested in the program should call 803-535-1236 for more information.
  • Monthly SNAP Help is available at the Vance Family and Friends Center. Catherine Bamberg, Employment and Training coordinator for Orangeburg, Calhoun and Bamburg counties, will be available to meet with residents at the center from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Dec. 13. Vance Town Council's next regularly scheduled meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
