SUMMERVILLE — A Dorchester County man was charged with forgery after authorities said he altered a divorce decree that he mailed to his girlfriend.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said 45-year-old Edward Brown of Summerville could be facing up to three years in prison after he was charged Wednesday.

In an affidavit against Brown, investigators claim the Branch Creek Trail man altered a genuine divorce decree from his first wife by scanning it into his computer and making the changes to reflect he was divorced from his second wife.

The affidavit indicates that sometime between August and January, Brown then mailed the forged divorce decree to his girlfriend.
