COLUMBIA - Rep. Jerry Govan, D-Orangeburg, has been arrested and charged with assaulting a fellow Orangeburg legislator.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department said in a news release Thursday that Govan was arrested on a third-degree assault charge involving Orangeburg Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter.
The two Orangeburg Democrats were arguing May 11 in a hallway leading to the chamber over legislation consolidating Orangeburg County school districts.
A sheriff's report last week said a Statehouse security officer saw Govan try to grab or push Cobb-Hunter.
She said she held out her hand to keep Govan away and he grabbed her wrist and twisted.
Govan has served as the representative of House District 95 since 1993. He is the county attendance supervisor for Orangeburg County School Districts 3, 4 and 5, and the owner of Govan Insurance Agency.
He ranks fourth in seniority in the General Assembly.
