The body of a 70-year-old Branchville man was found at home Monday, a month after an acquaintance last spoke to him.

Darris Grant, 70, of 5412 Freedom Road, died of natural causes, Orangeburg County Chief Deputy Coroner Sean Fogle said.

He was discovered after a U.S. postal worker mentioned to Grant’s acquaintance that the 70-year-old hadn’t retrieved his mail from his mailbox. There were two Social Security checks in it, according to an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The acquaintance said he had to pry open the locked screen door to get inside and check on Grant.

He called law enforcement after finding the body in the living room.

This is the second time in less than two months that a postal worker’s questions have led officials to discover a person’s body.

On June 12, a U.S. postal worker called law enforcement when a Church Street woman in Denmark didn’t collect her mail after several days.
