DORCHESTER -- Richard Lee Washington, 90, affectionately known as 'Daddy Richard,' of 216 Gum Hill Road, passed into eternal rest on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, at his home.
Home-going services will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 15, at the Greater St. Paul AM E Church, 633 Thomas Kate Road. Dorchester, with the Rev. Henry Gabe III officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Washington will be in repose from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Ling Funeral Home Chapel, 5580 Memorial Blvd., St. George.
Mr. Washington was born June 23, 1927, a son of the late Jerry and Della Washington. He attended the public schools of South Carolina before moving to Philadelphia and New York. He was joined in holy matrimony with Lucille Washington, his devoted wife for more than 67 years preceded him in death on May 16, 2017. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Charles Washington and Richard Washington; three sisters; and five brothers
At an early age, he joined the Bethel Baptist Church of St. George. Upon moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., he became a dedicated member of the Apostolic Gospel Church of Christ until he returned to South Carolina and continued to worship at the Greater St. Paul AM.E Church, where he served untiringly. He was an outstanding employee of Bellevue Hospital for 44 years and 34 years at Good House Keeping Co. of New York City prior to his retirement in 1994.
Surviving are four sons, James Edward of S.C., Arnold Washington of New York City, Reginald (Bertha) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jeremiah 'Jerry' Washington (caregiver) of Dorchester; one beloved daughter and caregiver, Delores 'Idella' Royall of Dorchester; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
