Homeless? You’re probably hungry too. A free breakfast awaits you this Friday only between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. at the Samaritan House, 1580 Middleton St., Orangeburg.

The offer is designed to encourage participation in a census of the homeless in Orangeburg County. The survey will give a better idea of how many homeless are in our midst and what assistance they need. Documenting the number and the needs of the homeless helps local agencies like the homeless shelter continue to get federal funding.

Every two years, the Samaritan House reports how many people it served on a particular night.

This year, a larger task is being attempted. Trained volunteers with the Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless are taking a “street count” that includes homeless people who do not stay at the Samaritan House. That hasn’t been done here for more than a decade, says Vertelle Pondexter-Jamison, director of the Samaritan House.

If you’re homeless in Orangeburg County but miss the breakfast on Friday, you can still be counted. Before the end of January, visit the Samaritan House, email shouse11@att.net or call 803-516-0088.
