A 20-year-old inmate was hospitalized after he tried to kill himself at the Orangeburg County Detention Center, according to a sheriff’s office incident report.

The North Charleston man was found in his cell Sunday morning. He had tried to hang himself with a bed sheet.

He was taken to the Regional Medical Center.

Orangeburg County Administrator Harold Young said the detention center has preventative measures in place to encourage officers to be aware of crisis issues.

“We’re glad the officers were doing their job,” Young said.

Young said this wasn’t the first time the inmate attempted suicide in a detention center.

“He’s been incarcerated before and has done the same thing,” Young said.

A deputy noted that the inmate didn’t have a roommate at the time of the incident.
