Serial entrepreneur Joel Stevenson is the upcoming guest speaker for South Carolina State University’s Executive Speaker Series, which will be held at noon Wednesday in the Belcher Hall fourth floor auditorium.
He will speak to students about “what you need to know to start a business.”
Stevenson is a leader, team builder and member of various management teams which started and cultivated four hazardous waste management companies
During his career in the private business sector, two of the companies Stevenson started were sold to private investors. One of his businesses became public, and the fourth business was sold to a Fortune 500 company. He also served as president of three of the companies.
After selling his last company, Stevenson was hired by the University of South Carolina to start the Technology Incubator, which provides space and resources for start-up businesses.
During the 12 years he served as executive director of the incubator, he served 90 other companies as their lead strategic consultant.
The incubator provided lessons in intellectual property, marketing, sales, human resources, accounting, safety, production and financing, as well as technical expertise in the use of technology.
Stevenson has served on the boards of companies he and his partners pioneered, as well as the National Business Incubation Association’s Board.
In July 2011, Stevenson retired from the incubator and became a full-time professor of entrepreneurship and strategic management at the Moore School of Business. He is also the recipient of the Moore School of Business Outstanding Elective Professor award, presented by the professional master of business administration classes of 2009 and 2011.
