The U.S. 301 bridge over the Edisto River in Orangeburg remains closed until a structural assessment is complete.

S.C. Department of Transportation District 7 Maintenance Engineer David Brandyburg said a bridge inspection team is inspecting the bridge this morning.

"I'm still waiting on the bridge inspection team. They're supposed to be out there this morning, so hopefully by lunchtime I would know if it is OK to open back up or not. To be honest, I don't know how long it's gonna take them to inspect it," he said.

Brandyburg said the DOT simply wants to be as cautious as they can be before allowing traffic flow over the bridge.

"Right now we're erring on the side of caution. We're not gonna open it until they can insepct underneath. They should be out there checking it now. As soon as they give us the yay or nay, we'll know whether we can open it or not. If everything is good, then we can open it," he said.
