ORANGEBURG OUT OF THE PAST

Orangeburg High School Mascots, 1960: For many years the senior class at Orangeburg High School chose a young boy and a young girl to be their class mascots. In 1960 they chose Max Runager and Cathy Morgan to be their mascots. Max died recently after a storied career in football. He was considered to be the most outstanding punter in the University of South Carolina’s football history. Afterward he had an outstanding career for 11 years in the National Football League, being on two Super Bowl teams, winning one Super Bowl ring. Both Max and Cathy came from sports-minded families. Cathy’s father, Cliff Morgan, was the coach for all sports at Orangeburg High School in the 1940s. Max’s father, Geb Runager, was both the football and boys’ basketball coach at Orangeburg High for a number of years.
