ORANGEBURG OUT OF THE PAST

Dr. James C. Parler, 1952: Dr. James C. Parler was a renowned educator in Orangeburg. He graduated from South Carolina State University in 1935 and received a Masters degree from Columbia University in 1937. In 1938 he became the principal of Wilkinson High School where he led its destiny for many years. During the late 1950s he was appointed as the Administrative Principal for all the African American schools in what is now Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five. For many years he was a part time Professor of Education and a Visiting Professor at both South Carolina State University and Claflin University. Dr. Parler was well respected in education circles in Orangeburg. He and his wife developed the residential neighborhood known as Parlerdale. Dr. Parler died unexpectedly at the age of 49 on New Year’s Day in 1961.
