ORANGEBURG OUT OF THE PAST

Civil Rights Movement, circa 1962: Today is the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. He inspired the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s. During this time, many Freedom Marches were conducted protesting segregation. Pictured here are some Orangeburg leaders conducting one of these marches near the Railroad Corner around 1962. Left to right are Jim Sulton, John Brunson, Earl Middleton, Gloria Rackley, Dr. Charles Thomas, Rev. I. DeQuincy Newman, Mrs. Hampton D. Smith, Mrs. Hallie Thompson, Loretta Thomas and others.
