ORANGEBURG OUT OF THE PAST

Orangeburg High School Football Team, 1948: The starting offensive lineup for the 1948 Orangeburg High School football team is show here. Quarterback Johnny Gramling went on to star at the University of South Carolina where he set several school records. Sadly Johnny Gramling died last week and Hank Mirmow died last November. This 1948 season was the first year that legendary coach Bill Clark began coaching in Orangeburg. Altogether nine members of this team would be granted full college scholarships to various colleges. Left to Right, Front Row: Dreher Gaskin; L.P. Thackston, co-captain; Dean Livingston; Hank Mirmow; Tommy Sheriff, co-captain; Bill Spires; and Louis Boone. Back Row: Jimmy Johnson; Johnny Gramling; Bobby Wactor; and Jim Sloan. Picture courtesy of Louis Boone and provided by Dr. Gene Atkinson.
