ORANGEBURG OUT OF THE PAST

Dean Livingston, Publisher, The Times and Democrat, circa 1966: From the time he was a small boy, Dean Livingston always wanted to be a newspaperman. He became the Publisher of The Times and Democrat in 1962 and held that position for 37 years until his retirement in 1999. One of the greatest challenges he faced was in 1972 when the physical plant of the newspaper was completely destroyed by fire, yet he and the staff scrambled together and did not miss a single day publishing The Times and Democrat. They used newspaper facilities in Sumter and Rock Hill to carry out the printing every day until a new building could be constructed and a press installed.
