SANTEE — Lone Star Barbecue and Mercantile in Santee will hold its 10th annual Bluegrass and Country Music Hoe Down over Memorial Day weekend. The three days of pickin’ and singin’ will begin Friday, May 25, and continue through Sunday, May 27.

Entertainment will get under way at 5:45 p.m. May 25 with Lonesome Dove Country Band of Reevesville, followed by The Blue Iguanas Bluegrass Band from the Batesburg-Leesville area.

On May 26, the Hoe Down will kick off at 12:45 p.m. with The Claude Lucas Bluegrass Band of Gaston, who will entertain before playing backup during the event’s open stage program, set for 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. Performances by The Red Top Ramblers of Charleston, the Lowcountry’s Common Ground and The Pine Hill Ramblers from the Pine Hill community of Orangeburg County will round out the day’s entertainment.

A full slate of music is planned for May 27, with the first band, Columbia’s The Ladies of the Pickin’ Parlor, starting at 11:30 a.m. Another Columbia band, The Sugar Loaf Mountain Boys, and performances by Tristina Miller of Summerville and Mandy’s Diving Horses Band of Irmo, will round out the day.

“I am really excited with the groups that will be performing at this year’s Hoe Down,” said Pat Williams, owner of Lone Star Barbecue and Mercantile. “There will be a great mix of both bluegrass and country music entertainment. Also, five of the bands are among the best that have ever performed at Lone Star, and the other five will be performing for the first time at one of our festivals.

“The spectators will be in a for a real treat all weekend long.”

All but one of the bands will perform on an outdoor stage. Sunday’s performance by The Ladies of the Pickin’ Parlor will be held in Lone Star’s main dining hall.

The family-friendly Hoe Down is free and open to the public, but the bands do expect tips. No coolers or alcoholic beverages will be allowed. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
