HILTON HEAD ISLAND – The fourth annual Marsh Tacky Beach Races will be held Sunday at the Holiday Inn on South Forest Beach Drive, Hilton Head Island.
The Marsh Tacky is officially recognized as South Carolina’s State Heritage Horse for the role it has played in the history of the state. Whether delivering the mail, bringing folks to church, or plowing the fields, the Marsh Tacky has endured for more than 400 years in South Carolina. As transportation for the American troops through the state’s rough and swampy terrain during the American Revolution to patrolling our shores from the threat of enemy troops during World War II, the March Tacky is truly one of South Carolina’s greatest heroes.
Most of the credit for the State Heritage Horse designation goes to the members of the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association and to people who had the foresight to preserve this part of South Carolina’s heritage. The Tackies not only reflect the history and culture of South Carolina, but they also represent the strength, beauty and resilience of the people of our state.
