ST. MATTHEWS — An irrigation equipment company here is now operating in a new location.

Guess Irrigation Co. has moved to 135 Old Highway Number Six about a mile from downtown into the former Pioneer Seed facility.

The store moved from its U.S. Highway 601 site. The site still will operate as a John Deere dealership.

Company president David Hane said growth in business is the reason for the move.

“We are not just selling things that go around in circles,” Hane said, referring to sprinklers. “We are selling technology and computer systems.”

Hane expressed his appreciation for all those who have helped the company grow.

“We thank them for their business and we want to be their water and technology solution for the future,” Hane said.

The new location is expected to result in an addition of three jobs. The facility employs about 12.

Guess was started in St. Matthews as hardware store in 1917 by Hane’s great-grandfather, Samuel Marvin Guess.

Agricultural items sold included the John Deere mule plow.

In 1975, Hane’s grandfather Keitt Hane Sr., father Keitt Hane Jr., and cousin Shay Hane decided that some progressive customers were interested in mechanized irrigation, and after researching the subject, they decided the company would become a Lockwood dealer.

“Mr. J.D. ‘Pally’ Wiles was Guess Farm Equipment’s first customer in 1976,” said Hane, who was 10 years old at the time. “It was believed that some of these systems would be sold and it would be over. Here we are 37 years later.”

In 1991, Guess Irrigation also became a Valley Dealer.

In 1998 Guess Farm Equipment opened a new store in Hampton for its John Deere Division, and included an irrigation division. Under the management of Shay Hane, Hampton and the rest of the organization grew in technological advancement.

“Now hundreds of systems can be managed by computer, and the farmer can control all of them with a click of a mouse instead of driving to each system and physically cutting each one on or off,” Hane said. This is only the beginning, and Guess and Valley are on the cutting edge.”

In 2010 Guess Irrigation opened a new location in Hartsville and now has a footprint in the Pee Dee.

Hane touts the company as the only Valley Dealer in the state.

Guess has a total of 16 employees among three locations.
