Three real contenders remain in presidential race

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

And then there were three.

The events of yesterday and this past weekend have limited the field of viable White House contenders to three senators. The nation’s 44th president will be Hillary Clinton, John McCain or Barack Obama.

Two high-profile candidates dropped out within hours of each other yesterday.

One-on-one with Obama

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Tuesday night was a night filled with anticipation for those who came out to South Carolina State University to see Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama. Some waited in the long line outside Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center in the midst of pouring rain to see the man they believe could change America.

Once inside, relieved from the cold, wet atmosphere, they waited some more. After Obama’s celebrity entourage of Usher, Kerry Washington and Chris Tucker finally took the stage, the wait was almost over. Then as Obama began the walk to the stage, the crowd exploded in an sense of excitement that rocked the decibel levels.

Focus shifts to Democrats

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Now, the Democrats take center stage in South Carolina.

The three remaining viable candidates will all appear today at the Statehouse to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. day. The tone from there should shift to a more contentious one, as each will tout their abilities to lead and change the nation as the best.

The Mac is back

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

As they say in golf, Saturday was moving day for Republican presidential candidates. For Republicans, South Carolina has historically been the state where the line between contenders and pretenders is drawn.

Sen. John McCain established himself as a contender with his momentum-building victory last night. It appears all that is standing between McCain and the GOP nomination is Rudy Giuliani’s unprecedented campaign strategy to skip the traditional early voting states, hoping for victory in Florida.

GOP candidates ready to rumble in S.C.

As the legendary boxing announcer Michael Buffer would say, “let’s get ready to rumble.”

After months of political jump roping and traveling across the country to showcase their skills, the Republican presidential contenders are battling in South Carolina today. It is the state where the #1 contender for the GOP title has emerged since 1980.

In this corner, former Baptist minister, Arkansas governor and Iowa Heavyweight Champion Mike Huckabee. He’s accompanied by his trainer Chuck Norris.

Poll has Huckabee, McCain deadlocked in Palmetto State

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

There’s one day remaining for Republican presidential candidates to court South Carolina voters in a state historically critical to the nomination.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone poll has Mike Huckabee and Sen. John McCain deadlocked with each getting 24 percent of the vote. This makes the next 24 hours of the campaign incredibly critical. A McCain win solidifies him as the prohibitive GOP frontrunner, while a Huckabee win would likely protract the race to Super Duper Tuesday and maybe beyond.

S.C. a critical piece for Thompson, Huckabee

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Republicans have seen three different states select three different primary winners thus far in the crowded race for the GOP nomination.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney secured a much needed victory in Michigan, defeating Sen. John McCain by a larger-than-expected margin.

Where does this leave South Carolina in this complicated jigsaw puzzle?

For former Sen. Fred Thompson and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, South Carolina is an essential piece of the puzzle.

Thompson has staked all his chips on the Palmetto State, and a loss would certainly end his chances. However, a win would breathe new life into a campaign that so far has yielded disappointing returns in early voting states.

Huckabee’s attempt to court evangelical Christians as a core constituency makes South Carolina a must win for his campaign as well. Currently, Huckabee is second to McCain in S.C. poll averages, according to RealClearPolitics.com.
